Learning in Fledglings

In Fledglings Class we learn in so many different ways. Our curriculum stems from the children’s own interests and ideas and helps them to become happy, confident, able to make decisions and able to talk about their own learning. We learn through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated play (Choosing Time) in our indoor and outdoor classrooms, as well as spending Carpet Time sessions together too, learning new things and practising our skills. These include daily Phonics (Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised) lessons and Maths (White Rose) opportunities, as well as regular handwriting sessions, reading groups, weekly maths and writing tasks, Topic activities, PSHE (Jigsaw) and RE (Worcestershire RE Syllabus). We also have two PE sessions (Real PE) and one Forest School session each week, as well as taking part in some assemblies and spending time each week with our ‘reading buddies’ from another class. Developing Speech and Language skills and a love of reading is central to our approach in Fledglings Class and children are immersed in language, stories, story-telling and rich opportunities to talk and to listen. Our 'Books of the Week' act as sparks for our learning, and we engage with a minimum of two Story Times each day, take part in Storytelling sessions, use the Word Aware language programme and have opportunities to explore books, stories and language in all areas of the classroom. In addition to our Reading Corner, we also have a class library which children can borrow books from every day to take home and share with an adult.

In Fledglings, we work towards the 17 Early Learning Goals laid out in the statutory Early Years Framework (2021), supported by the Development Matters (2021) objectives for Reception Class and our curriculum is split into the following seven areas of learning:

Meet the Super Learners

These characters help us to talk about our learning. In Fledglings Class, we try hard to be Explorers, Thinkers and Triers in our learning and we like to talk about any challenges we faced, times we had to rethink the plan, things that surprised us and the things that we discovered. These characters help us to understand what good learning might look like and to talk about our achievements and targets.

For more information on how we learn and are assessed, see our Early Years Policy and Curriculum documents, which can be found below:
