Eagles Class Learning: Summer Term 2024

A Look into the Future: The Future is Ours

Have you ever wondered what the future may hold? This term Eagles are thinking about how our futures are created by what we do today and not tomorrow. We will looking at future jobs, technology and how to protect the future of the planet. so come with us on a journey to catch a glimpse of the future!

Technology of the Future: The Hoverbike

In English, we will be studying different possible modes of transport that might be used to get around in the future. One of these is the Hoverbike. However, new inventions can come with certain difficulties; maybe Mr Blobb should have read the instruction manual first?! Watch the animation below and see what you think!

Eagles design their own hover products: 30th April 2024

In English, we have been exploring the company of Levitation International who Mr Blobb purchased his hoverbike from. Due to his 'incident' with the hoverbike, he was not very happy with the level of customer service he received. We also worked out that the instructions that were included in the package must not have been written clearly which caused Mr Blobb's problems.

Then we were given a set of instructions from a rival company called HOVERBIKES R US. We identified the features that made it more useful to customers and looked at the adverbials used to make the instructions clearer:

We were then given a company memo that explained that Levitation International were keen to expand their range of hover products in order to appeal to more customers.

We then got on a began designing our new potential products such as: Hover Shoes, Hover Saddle, Hover Board, Hover Segway, Hover Boat and even a Hover Pet Carrier! We then had to present them to a small group in order to make sure we knew our products well and get any useful feedback.

We are now going to start to write the instructions that go with our product using all of the learning from our sessions so far.  Happy Hovering!

Eagles Computing: Flat-File Databases

In computing, Eagles have been exploring databases: their use and how to search them for information. Data is very useful. It helps us to make decisions and answer questions. However, when we collect large amounts of data it can take a long time to sort through it so we can use it. The way we organise our data can make it a lot easier to use. Click on the picture below to watch a video all about databases:

We then explored some databases online:

Minibeasts Database  Countries Database Titanic Database

We learnt how to search and sort the data using the = sign and then sorting the data into descending order. This video shows how to find out which german speaking country has the smallest population.

In the next lesson, we looked at using the >, <, <=, >=, AND, OR search tools to refine our searches even more. Why not go onto the Titanic database and follow the videos below to find out even more about the passengers that were on that fateful journey?

Use the ‘AND’ tool in the Titanic database to answer the following questions:

  • How many males were in first class?
  • How many females died?
  • How many females boarded in Belfast?
  • How many males under ten years old were on board?

/i/video/Eagles_Videos_2023-2024/5_4_4_2_-_AND_searches__Video_.mp4

Use the ‘OR’ tool in the Titanic database to answer the following questions:

  • How many people boarded at Belfast or Queenstown?
  • How many of the passengers were under 18 or over 70?
  • Who was the oldest person in first or second class?
  • Who was the oldest person out of people who boarded at Southampton or Cherbourg?

Eagles Trip to the Commandery Museum: 5th June 2024

In our local history project, Eagles have been studying the importance of the Battle of Worcester to British history. We learnt about the war between King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell in order to control the country and how this war ended with the Battle of Worcester. To find out more about this important moment in our local and national history, we visited the Commandery Museum in Worcester.

The English Civil War was a series of battles fought between 1642 and 1651. On one side were supporters of the king (Charles I) and on the other were supporters of Parliament (led by Oliver Cromwell). The Civil War resulted in the arrest of Charles followed by 11 years when England had no monarch. The monarchy was restored in 1660 when Oliver Cromwell died and King Charles II was restored to the throne. On our visit, we participated in two workshops. In our first workshop with Alison, we found out about what life was like for the different soldiers who fought in the battle. We were about to dress up in the uniforms, handle some replica (and very safe!) weapons and then we went outside and were put through our paces in a pike drill. Next, we went on a tour on the Commandery to see its history from being a Monastic hospital to its Edwardian heritage. We even saw Oliver Cromwell's death mask! In the afternoon, we walked up the hill behind the Commandery to Fort Royal Park with our guide Ben. He explained more about the battle as the park is the location of part of the battlefield. We learnt why the park was used as it had a good vantage point of the city and how it supported the accurate firing of cannon balls towards the enemy. Finally, he showed us the sort of tools that a surgeon would have used to help the wounded soldiers; they were all a bit scary! We were so glad that surgeons don't use them on patients today!

Here are some pictures of our day and video of our PIke Drill:

We had a great day learning all about this famous moment in our local history and how it changed the country as a whole. Thank you to everyone who helped our trip to be so successful!

Our Science Fiction Stories in English: June 2024

We have been busy exploring futuristic science fiction stories based on the animation 'Eye of the Storm'. This is a brilliant video as we loved the character, the atmosphere and the fact that it made us ask lots of questions. Lots of us thought that either it showed the future of the planet or it could be set on a different planet altogether! Watch the video to find out:

We are going to write a ship's log based on what we think the character is thinking and feeling during this part of his journey and then we will be writing sequels to the story as we all have our own ideas of what happens next! Watch this space!

Year 5 and 6 Rounders Competition: Thursday 20th June 2024

For one of our final tournaments of the year, a team from Year 5 and 6 went to Chantry in order to compete in a Rounders tournament. We were really looking forward to it as some of us had participated last year and really enjoyed it.

When we arrived, we were told we would be playing four matches against: Abberley, Grimley, Martley and Hallow. First we played Martley; it was a highly competitive match from both teams. Aussie and Harry scored some amazing whole rounders - the ball seemed to go for miles!  We were feeling very confident going into the second match against Abberley. This was again a match full of full and half rounders with a brilliant catch from Braxton.

Then we were able to play two further matches against Grimley and Hallow. We could tell that we were really beginning to gel as a team and our fielding skills certainly got better. We got quite a few players out and there was another magnificent catch by Will.

After all of our matches, Mrs Coleman announced the rankings and we were so pleased to hear that we had come third overall! We were so pleased with this result as it showed that we had been a brilliant team. Thank you to Mrs Hughes for taking us to the tournament and thank you to Mrs Coleman (and her Young Leaders) who made the event so enjoyable! We can't wait to play again next year

Eagles Turn Detective: Maths Murder Mystery!

In maths, we have been trying to solve a very mysterious case using vital data to help us. It is a case of murder and intrigue! The victim was Tom, a painter, who was savagely pushed out of a hotel Bell Tower, causing him serious injury. There were five suspects who all seemed to have a motive and so we looked at some vital evidence that might point towards the culprit!

We were given a map of the Hatfield Manor House Hotel and our first pieces of evidence based on the suspect's pulse rates at different times of the day in question. We were asked to show this data in bar graphs and line graphs to see what type of graph was the most suitable for this type of data.  We have looked at the pulse rates of the 6 people involved across the day and produced bar charts and line graphs to help us understand the data better. We have found the average pulse rate for each person to see if that helps us to work out the culprit. At this moment, lots of us believed that either Desna or Jackie could be responsible.

We have spent a long time looking through lots of pieces of new evidence and presenting them in different ways including pie charts. Each suspect seemed to have a clear motive:

Lorna: Tom has used Lorna’s Yoga classes and was unhappy with the standard of the Yoga she was doing. He may have invested in her yoga business but now wants his money back. Did Lorna find out that Tom had given her a 0 rating for customer satisfaction?

Simon: We found out that Simon enters lots of garden competitions. Most recently, he designed and created a friendship garden and got rave reviews from 2 out of 3 of the judges and the public. However, one judge gave him very low marks which caused his garden to come 12th. Is Tom the judge that Simon thinks is trying to make sure that he doesn’t win an award? Was Simon getting revenge?

Jackie: Jackie and Tom used to 'go out' but Jackie didn't want to end up helping Tom run the hotel so she broke things off. Soon after, she met John and like the idea of being an MP's wife so that he could keep her in the rich lifestyle that she had always known.  On their wedding day, Tom showed up and tried to persuade Jackie to leave John and marry him; there was a huge fight between Tom and John which ruined the wedding. She has not seen Tom since that day. Recently, there has been rumours that her very expensive tastes for clothes and priceless art works for her house mean that she is in a huge amount of debt.  Did Tom tell the media about her debt problems?

Desna: Desna runs the Art Trail Gallery and Tom is a partner in the business. As an investor, Tom helps by giving Desna advice; he looks out for pieces of art that are coming up for auction, tells Desna to buy it and then some time later, she can sell it at a higher price, therefore making lots of money. Recently, sales have gone down especially for Tom’s paintings. Why is Tom’s artwork not selling and is murder a way to ‘get rid’ of the problem?

John: John is a government MP who has recently got the job as Minister for Transport. He wants to build lots more roads in order to ease the traffic problems around London. The hotel is close to London and a road is proposed to link to the M25 to Heathrow Airport. Hatfield Manor House Hotel is situated in the area where the new road is to be built. The plans mean that the hotel would be demolished and the grounds would be flattened to make way for the dual carriage way. Tom, as one of the owners of the hotel is firmly against this new road building project and the two have had many ‘heated’ arguments over it. Does John want Tom out of the way so that the road building project can go ahead?

Watch this space to find out who we finally decided was the person responsible
