The Clifton Offer for P.E and Sport

Throughout their time at Clifton, we aim to offer a broad, balanced and engaging school curriculum that supports the development of the whole child in these areas:

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 the P.E Curriculum covers the following:

An emphasis on the 3 core movement skills: 

  1. Locomotion - movement form one point to another
  2. Object Control - sending, receiving and controlling an object
  3. Stability - body balance in static and dynamic movement situations
  • Children experience at least 2 hours of PE a week in a high quality PE curriculum, which progressively develops these movements.
  • All children in Key Stage 1 have the opportunity to participate in our Play Leaders lunchtime activities (for instance Jumping Jaxx) which help children master these basic movements.
  • Through our PE cluster initiative, children in Key Stage 1 also have the opportunity to participate in a Multiskills Festival run at the Chantry
  • Participate in simplified team games, developing simple tactics
  • Swimming opportunities from Year 1 where water confidence skills annd swimming strokes are taught to enable pupils to be able to swim a width of the pool by the end of Year 2
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns which we aim to relate to class topics wherever possible

In Key Stage 2 the P.E Curriculum covers the following:

  • A continued emphasis on the 3 core movement skills as taught in Early Years and Key Stage 1
  • In Years 5 and 6 - children have the opportunity to be trained as Clifton Sports Leaders which enable them to organise sporting events in school as part of the Jumping Jaxx initiative
                      
  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching skills in isolation and in combination
  • Experience a wide variety of sports that support the development of these skills including: Hockey, Football, Tag-Rugby, Netball, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics, Basketball
  • Play competitive games and apply basic attacking and defending tactics
  • Understand and show the values of teamwork, communication and sportsmanship when playing competitive sport
  • Through the Chantry sports cluster, children in Key stage 2 have significant opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sporting events against other schools. These include: Tag-Rugby, Football, Hockey (Quicksticks), Cross Country, Sportshall Athletics and Netball 
  • As part of the School Games initiative, children also have the opportunitiy to compete in sporting events against other schools in the district of West Worcestershire. These Include amongst others: Cross Country, Swimming, Tennis and Athletics
  • Develop flexibility, technique, control and balance through a range of sports such as gymnastics
  • Involvement in outdoor and adventurous activities and forest school activities
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and each others' and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
